Why does 1 + 1 = 2?
Start with the Peano Postulates They define the set of Natural Numbers N N is the smallest set satisfying these postulates:
P1. 1 is in N. P2. If x is in N, then its "successor" x' is in N. P3. There is no x such that x' = 1. P4. If x isn't 1, then there is a y in N such that y' = x. P5. If S is a subset of N, 1 is in S, and the implication (x in S => x' in S) holds, then S = N.
Then define Addition recursively
Def:
Let a and b be in N. If b = 1, then define a + b = a' (using P1 and P2). If b isn't 1, then let c' = b, with c in N(using P4), and define a + b = (a + c)'.
Now define 2:
Def:
2 = 1'
2 is in N by P1, P2, and the definition of 2.
Theorem:
1 + 1 = 2
Proof:
Use the first part of the definition of + with a = b = 1.
Then 1 + 1 = 1' = 2
Q.E.D.
There you go, Irishman

Oh no you don't, Irish, ME I got it ;D AND, I think I have the answer to Digger's puzzle as well are you ready? You're going to love this.... "Is it that time immediately following a man getting kicked in the groin" Proof: Time 'does' nothing...it is an artificial intellectual construct. Women laugh until they cry when they see this happen. Men fall to their knees (and usually continue on to the floor). <blushes> Aww, shucks, twas nothing. ;D

*Makes a note of Torra's latent hostility to males* *Puts on his nadger cup*
If it helps, Torra, the answer is a real thing. What I meant by 'It does nothing' is that it doesn't move, or talk, or you know, actually DO anything?
It's my first attempt at a riddle, cut me a little slack.

<is surprised by the use of the word 'latent'> <is equally surprised that any male would come to Gryffindor without a 'nadger cup' securely in place> OKAY, I'm kidding here I'm not dissing your riddle, Digger, I'm pointing out to Irish that you shouldn't shoot the messenger (in this case me ). I was saddened, Digger, to see that you didn't feel compelled to comment on the brilliance of my proof ;D But, I'll give it another go: A Wedding? Proof: A wedding does nothing, it is a name of a event at which people do stuff. Women cry at weddings all the time (so do men, but they hide it mostly). Certain religions require the men (and women) to kneel during part of the wedding ceremony. I'm not very attached to this answer, but, It does fit under certain conditions.

Torra gets the lion's share of the credit, she led me down the right path!
A logic riddle:
A horse is worth as much as two bulls and one sheep. A bull is worth as much as two cows. Two cows are worth as much as five donkeys. A donkey is worth as much as four sheep. How many sheep is a horse worth?

Oooh! A Linear System in six variables! Yaaay! As tempting as it is to break out the Matrix Algebra, I'll supress the Inner Geek just this once.
1. H = 2B + S 2. B = 2C 3. 2C = 5D 4. D = 4S
Substituting 4. into 3. yields 2C = 5(4S) simplifying 5. 2C = 20S
Substituting 5. into 2. yields 6. B = 20S
Substituting 6. into 1. yields
H = 2(20S) + S simplifying 7. H = 41S
One Horse is worth 41 Sheep.

Not really a riddle, so maybe I shouldn't put it here, but Oh Well.
What common Five Letter word has homophones of itself if you remove either it's first or second letter?

Ooops? I doubt that's what you're looking for, but my brain just about burst trying to go through the options for it so that's what you get Here's another riddle anyway (This can count for Torra's unless I was right with 'ooops' if she wants it to): I never was, am always to be; No one has seen me, nor will they see. The mantra of procastination; What is left to me will not get done.

Hi Whelp! I think your answer is "Tomorrow" ;D Hi Digger! I got nothing. Well I had something but I got over it:P Hey, thanks for posting the spaces...It's kind of hard to make out though. Are there really 17 letters in the first word? NO NO Don't tell me....I can't take being accosted by the angry hoards again so soon.

Nope, nothing so simple as using doubled first letters for mine. You'll need to find three separate words that sound the same for the solution.
Yeah, it's hard to see the spaces. I couldn't think of a better way to show them. I suppose I could put each word on a separate line.
And I'm not really sure why you would think there are 17 letters. Maybe you could share your thought processes with me? I'd love to know what you're thinking about.

I guess that knocks out Eerie(uncanny/weird) Erie(Lake) Erie(Indian nation of people)... Also Llama (four legged critter) Lama(a priest or monk in Lamaism) Lama(A Buddhist monk of Tibet or Mongolia). I'm going to need a hint I think. I'll wait for it until more people have a chance at this (Where's Wahoo when you need him?), though.
In the mean time:
A cool pool in a trench; Your thirst I will not quench. Right in front of you, never near; My lively lapping you won't hear.
(Oh, and Torra, you got it! ;D ;D ;D)

Maybe you could share your thought processes with me? I'd love to know what you're thinking about. Hmmmm, my thought processes are leading me to throw myself in the lake across the street, NOW, Digger Who is Inipie and how is that she knows you so well? You're tormenting me! You know we can't have any ex parte communication about the dang blasted Crypto Contest!!! You know I think there are 17 letters in the first word 'cause that's where you put the blasted spaces. It sure isn't a 34 letter word and 17 is prime. *Tosses Digger a 'nadger cup' and stomps off muttering and flailing her arms in frustration*
