A New Dawn: OOC

This thread is where I will explain the RP, people can discuss what is happening or will happen, ask questions, etc.

A New Dawn takes place in a fantasy world similar to that of Dragon Court-although it will have a lower level of technology (no guns ). Most RP's do not have to be GM'ed (Game-Mastered: one person controls the setting and guides the game) but this one will be for the sake of those new to this. Each person will make a character in the character bio thread (only one character per person for this RP, please).

Alright, I have a bit of a time crunch (my lunch break is almost over), so I'll update this later.

I'm not picking on anyone here, just giving pointers. Most of you are pretty new to this; I understand.

First thing: leafsdude, it is generally unacceptable to go around killing random people. Most RPs are plot driven, not action driven, so they are usually a lot less radom than DC. And if you do kill people, don't just say "I kill the Inn keeper;" it is pretty unlikely that the inn keeper just stood there and took it.

Second thing: When you post, try and be pretty detailed in your description and explanation of things; it will make the game that much more exciting and interesting.

Third thing: My fualt, I never said if you were a group or not, but you handled it just fine starting as one (mostly).

Ok, I'm back.
While it is not mandatory, writing in first person can enhance the feel of the posts. I am asking two friends of mine who have quite a bit of experience doing this to come help me for a bit. And please ask me questions if you have any.

I have had no trouble following your posts, doom's I have to read a bit to make sure what I am reading, but that is language issue, he is a Norwegian. I think if we all use a unified method we will get used to it and have no troubles. if we need t,o "whisper a secret" we can use the pm's here robert can show you how he has messaged me here.
yea it is a little slow right now but we are spread over who knows how many time zones and have different times we get on the pc but it is going fine I think!
any comments anyone?

First Person writing is totally optional; I was just offering at something that people could try. JTG said it well; an RP is really a cooperative narrative. While this is incredibly fun, it can also be challenging. I was a little nervous about it at first (I blame myself for not offering a better explanation-sorry everyone) but I think it has already come a long way. I am confident that once we have a few RPs going they will stay pretty strong and shouldn't encounter too many troubles.

Question: If we are in a combat situation and someone takes action, for example:
"Elsa takes aim and shoots a poison dart at enemy"
how do you determine the result? Will you be rolling those cool dice? Or other method? Just curious.

More Doom crushes 5 orc's in one great swing witrh his sword and they spash all our the place and half down all half ;D ;D ;DWell i duno

u have to play it fare...for example

~There are about five orcs surrounding SForce...the elf.~

(now this is where u note that im a elf (if u look at the char. sheets they say a lot) and that im able to have keen eyesight and fast reactions)

~SForce puts an arrow on his string as the orcs rush near...he fires at the lead orc and hits him in one of his lungs, and starts to run away in retreat...knowing that he'll be crushed if he stays.~

(now u also note that im an elf and faster then the orcs...now it seems im impossible to beat then...well elfs are weak in melee so if i were to go one on one with an orc id most likely lose)

~While running backwards SForce takes out another arrow and fires it backwards hitting an orc in the leg.~

(note that this orc isnt dead but just wounded.)

~SForce does the same runs away while firing arrows until they're dead~

(now usually u cant run away in a war because ull have things and people in your way...which u have to take into consideration of ur surroundings...and if there are enemies behind you...although this is just a blunt explination im not going into such detail.)

(now that wounded orc is still alive so i have to kill him still)

~SForce goes back to the wounded orc and he is up on one knee holding it to stop the pain. SForce takes out one of his broad swords...but the orc slashes him in the leg....SForce takes his sword and cuts his head off~

(note that in a melee attack hes better so he was able to hit me...but hes on the ground on one knee so he cant hit me that high...note the leg...but hes injured so im able to kill him before the pain comes to me.)

~SForce falls but uses his heal to heal the minor wound~

(note in my char. sheet i say that i have the spell of heal..but i clarify that i only have a lvl 1 (or 2 i forget) which only heals minor wounds...not like piercing arrows)

In this, and most RPs, combat is a little tricky. There aren't any concrete numbers to determine success or failure. It requires some practice, but you will get the hang of it.

SForce described it pretty well. Basically, you simply need to have a feel for what your character is capable of as well as the abilities of the enemy.

The first part is pretty easy; after all, you made your character and as long as you play fair, no problem! The second part, however, can be a lot more difficult. To make it easier, the actions of the enemy should be controlled by the GM (if there is one) or whichever player put the enemy in the RP (since they would then know how the enemy should act). It can be tricky; you need to try and have a feel for the power-level and style of RP you are playing. In some RPs, characters are made pretty much without limitations and combat is really just a way to show off your character's power.

With this RP, I will do the best I can to control any enemies the group encounters and demonstrate RP combat as best as I can.

Thanks for asking Sforce, but i was going to let the saga unfold as it developes. WE have a name of my father and proffession, Geoffry knows only this about and has a bunch of pent up anger towards him. It could be that SForce was wrong about his idenity but we will see as the story unfolds.
on a side note, please try not to "control" other peoples characters as much, it is an interactive story we all write together.

Doom, if you really want to kill something nothing says you can't take your character off on a little trip to do some scouting or hunting and stumble across something that needs killing... whether or not you lead it back to the party or take care of it yourself, combat can be initiated by a character. Right, Vyriello?

u cant just like say something like this

~Doom finds a boar takes out his sword and chases it back to the group.~

it just has to be more detail because if the boar were to see or hear the sword it would run away...so this might be better:

~Doom is sneaking around for his dinner when suddenly he sees a boar in between some bushes...he quietly motions over to [insert name of person in group] come help him if its even nessesary. Doom grabs his sword and takes it out but very slowly so the animal doesnt know that hes present. He slides the huge sword out inch by inch until finally the sword is out...he looks to see if the boar is still there and to his surprise it is. He walks close enough to the boar so it doesnt see him...lifs his sword over his head and slices the boar on its side wounding it so it cant move...He lifts the boar up as it squeals to be let loose. he takes it back to the group for a nice open camp fire dinner.~

thats just the way to do it...u just have to consider a couple of things like the fact that hes very big and can be heard easily.
