Well, no, but that's an excellent guess, come to think of it. Such an image, though... the poor bird that adopted a baby phoenix would get quite a surprise, wouldn't it?

Well, no. But another good guess. However, the story about "The Ugly Duckling" is MUCH more recent than this riddle!

No... And I don't know about Icelandic (don't linguists usually put that in its own category?) but since it's old english, and english before the French came and before too much latin trickled in was mostly Germanic... Anyway. Look at the riddle itself -talks about not having a father and mother, being raised as a guest by another family... what kind of bird is like this?

And Celora has GOT IT! YAY! (Three cheers, various "huzzahs" and general rejoicing) Okay, it's your turn now.
And, guys, we're allowed to have more than one riddle going at a time so if you found a nice one you want to share, let's hear it!

Born at the same time as the world, destined to live as long as the world, and yet never five weeks old. What is it?

Okay, I'm going to a little language jumble with this to make it a little harder What has quatre jambes, eats stroh, has une cuore, and can see as well at nuit comme le jour? *hint* there are four languages. This probably isn't that hard - but I didn't plan on solving the last one!
